Outfit: Pink + Navy and Meet Norbert!

As I sit at my desk typing this post, our new puppy Norbert is asleep in my lap. He is the most precious little thing, and he has definitely kept us busy over the past week. The potty training is going pretty well, but we really have to keep an eye on the little guy to make sure he is not getting into mischief (i.e. chewing plants, pulling lamp cords, or tumbling down the stairs.)

So, without further ado, meet our new little (furry) bundle of joy!

Norbert
Norwich Terrier
5 pounds
12 weeks old
Born 10/8/13

Today was one of the warmer days we've had here recently, so I headed outside to take some outfit shots (with Norbert, of course!)

Pink + Green + Navy + Puppy is really the perfect combo!

I plopped the little guy into my vintage Coach cross body... he didn't seem to mind

New Arrivals at J.Crew Factory

When J.Crew launched their factory website a few years back, I was thrilled. At first, the website was only open on the weekends, so I would have to wait until Saturday morning to get my fix. Now that the website is open 24/7 I
check the website a few times a week for sales and the like. For a while, I liked the clothing at the factory store better than the clothing at the actual store (I liked the prices better too!) You can snag up some really cute "old" (as in traditional) J.Crew pieces for great prices.

While perusing the factory website the other day, I found some great pieces that I just had to share with all of you. These items are perfect for spring, and have me wishing for warmer weather. I'm definitely going to keep my eye out for any sales or special promotions they have in the coming weeks, so that one or two of these items can make their way to my closet.

(I love this pattern. It was in the regular stores last spring. They sell a shirt and skirt too!)

(I have chino shorts in this same pattern, one of my favorite pairs! #anchorsaweigh)

(You can never have enough navy!)

(My mom has this and it is super cute with white pants!)

Printed Chambray Pajama Shirt and Pants
(I've been looking for some classic pajamas for a while now. These lightweight printed ones might do the trick. Navy + anchors = love!)

(Perfect with shorts or under a suit set for a pop of color!)

Printed Seahorse Bikini Top and Bottom
(Snag this up for spring break!)

(My J.Crew short collection is ridiculous. Regardless, these NEED to join the collection! I hope the restock my size soon!)

Need some outfit inspiration? Check out the Outfit Obsessions section of the factory website.

Two of my favorite "Outfit Obsessions" that are so "me!"

Do you like J.Crew factory? Are there any items that you are lusting over for spring?

The FAIR-est Sweater of Them All

One of my favorite aspects of fall and winter fashion is layering and texture. I love to pair sweaters with buttons ups, socks with tights, and pick the perfect coat to layer over my outfit.

Sweaters and button ups are my one of my favorite combos, and while shopping this weekend in St. Louis, I noticed a fair (no pun intended) amount of fair isle sweaters on display.

Fair Isle sweaters are nothing new to the fashion world. The knitting technique originated in Scotland in the early 20th century. They have been worn by women and men alike over the past century, but all of a sudden they seem to have resurged in popularity.

I myself do not have a fair isle sweater in my closet, but I'm currently on the hunt. I would style mine over a denim button up with navy cords and bean boots, or wear it with a wool skirt and tights for more dressy events.

Here's some fair isle style to get you inspired:

Here are some sweaters I'm currently coveting. Hopefully I can swipe one of these at a Cyber Monday sale. Who's with me?

Do you own a fair isle sweater? How do you style it?

BRIGHT White

Memorial Day has come and gone, and today is the last day of May. This means that most people are out of school, and summer has officially begun. It's time to dig into the back of your closet and dresser, and pull out those white summer staples that have been in storage all winter. Hurry! Labor Day will come faster than you think!

BRIGHT White: Summer Staples

What are your "BRIGHT white" summer essentials? What will you be pulling out of the back of your closet, and what will you be scouting out to purchase? I'd love to hear!

Graduation Dresses

May has officially begun, so naturally, graduation season is set to kick off! I personally only have two more weeks of high school, and then I graduate on May 19th.

I found the dress I will be wearing to the actual ceremony and my graduation party months ago (I'm a major planner!) and I will reveal that dress in a later post. For now, I've compiled some of my favorite graduation-worthy dresses for those of you still on the hunt for that perfect dress.

Not graduating this year? No worries. Many of these dresses are perfect summer staples, and are ideal to wear to weddings, parties, and the like this summer.

#1. Colorblocked

Stay right on trend in these bright two-tone dresses. The yellow reminds me of sweet summer sunshine, and would look absolutely darling with white wedges. The green and blue dress is a bit more trendy, and would be best polished off with a chunky statement necklace.

#2: Lace and Eyelet

Delicate lace and eyelet look polished and feminine, especially when paired with the right jewelry. I love this eyelet dress from Old Navy. It comes in lots of punchy colors and the silhouette flatters a variety of body types. The tiers on this lace Jessica Simpson dress make a definite statement, but the shift style keeps things classic.

#3: Patterned

Looking for something a little more eye catching? A printed dress is the way to go! This geometric printed shift dress from Gap is bold in pink and navy. I think a pair of navy wedges would look stunning! What girl wouldn't want to don a Lilly Pulitzer dress at her graduation? This floral print is bright and sweet, and the lace detailing on the back is just too cute. White sandals required! Although a bit pricey, this Lilly dress will carry you through summers for years to come, and always remind you of your graduation day and new beginnings.

#4: Polka-Dots

What could be more fun than polka-dots?! Some people believe that polka-dots are childish, but I disagree. Both of these dresses have flattering and sophisticated fits, and the muted colors of the prints keep things grown-up. With these dresses, I would avoid overdoing it on jewelry and let the polka-dots speak for themselves!

#5: Solid

Sometimes simple is better! This coral dress by Tahari packs a lot of personality, with a tiny peplum and pleating. I love how it's styled with a little bow belt. This dress is just asking for gold jewelry and shoes! This dress by Merona comes in plenty of colors, and is perfect for cooler climates where you may not want to expose your shoulders. The cut-out detail is a cute touch, and the tie-belt will cinch in your waist.

#6: Striped

You've made it this far and earned your stripes, why not show it! The cool color scheme of this dress from Loft is bright and fun. I absolutely adore the navy and white stripes on this drop waist dress from J.Crew Factory. Very nautical! I think it would look super cute with a red bubble necklace and espadrille wedges.

Other Considerations:

~ Strapless Dresses: Strapless dresses and I have just never gotten along. Maybe it's because I always have really terrible tan lines, or (more likely) it's because I constantly have to tug the dress up. Strapless dresses are definitely an option if you feel comfortable! Just make sure the fit is right and get alterations or garment tape if need be. Optional: strapless dresses almost always look great with a short strand of pearls!

~ Peplums/Full skirts: I love a good peplum as much as the next girl, but under a graduation gown things might get a bit poofy. To avoid unsightly lumps and bumps in your gown caused by excessive peplums and full skirts, stick to A-line, "Fit and Flare," and shift style dresses.

~Footwear: Different schools have different requirements. Some schools require heels, some require a certain color shoe (black, for example), and some don't list a preference. Keep this in mind when dress shopping. You don't want to have to worry about toting multiple pairs of shoes to the ceremony. (ie: one pair for pictures and one pair for the actual ceremony.) It's a big day, and the last thing you want to worry about is shoe issues.

~How Many Dresses do I Need?: Looking for an excuse to buy another dress because you have an awards ceremony, senior banquet, actual graduation ceremony, and friends' parties? Yeah, me too. Then I realized it would be kind of crazy for me to have three separate dresses, especially since I was splurging on my dress for the actual ceremony. I decided to wear the same dress to the ceremony and my party (because I am absolutely in love with it!), and switch up the jewelry and shoes for each event. I have an awards ceremony as well, and I am wearing a dress I already have. This is a personal choice, but if you can it's always nice to maximize the wear on nicer dresses that you'd only wear once or twice. Then you can splurge and not feel as bad! Switch up the shoes and accessories and you can achieve a different look!

I hope this post helped you get some ideas for graduation dresses. If you have any questions or are in need of more specific suggestions, leave a comment below or e-mail me at stylishclassycreative@gmail.com.

I can't wait to see your dress choices! Link up posts/pictures in the comments.

Prom Season

It's that time of year again. Your favorite magazines are filled with dress ads and style features, and everyone is abuzz about who is asking who. That's right, it's officially prom season!

My school's prom is relatively early compared to all of the other high schools in town. Ours is this Saturday. I had a dress (and a date!) all figured out before spring break, and I couldn't be more excited for my senior prom!

I had originally bought a navy one-shouldered BCBG gown last fall on sale, but then I took a trip to Bloomingdale's in early March with my mom and sisters. Upon entering the dress department, I saw the most perfect dress on a mannequin and just knew I had to try it on. I fell in love with it immediately and knew it was the one. After a few alterations, and visiting raiding my mom's jewelry box, my prom ensemble is planned and ready to go.

What does the gown look like you may ask?

Well, I'm keeping that a secret until this weekend, but for now, here's a tiny preview:

I'm wearing silver jewelry and shoes. Tune in early next week to get pictures, a recap, and outfit details!

Did I mention I'm super picky when it comes to shopping for formal dresses? In this day in age, I think it is so hard to find cute and classy (ie: non-trashy) prom dresses. Our school does long dresses for prom, but the administration has gotten increasingly strict about cutouts and slits. This adds yet another element of difficulty in the prom dress search.

I have a few requirements I abide by when searching for dresses:

1. No prints (usually) - I been to several stores where animal print dresses or floral dresses adorn the racks. As a general rule, animal print almost always looks tacky. Floral prints, when done in an appropriate color scheme can work out. My friend Maggie, bought this dress and the soft color palette and similar color tones really work and make for an elegant look. Another example of pattern done right would be this Lilly Pulitzer dress worn by the College Prepster at her senior prom. (She lived in Florida, so it was easy to pull off!) Anything such as this dress, though, should probably be avoided.
Prints are less timeless than solids. In my opinion, you want to look back at pictures in twenty years, and still LOVE your dress. Prints go out of style faster. In addition, you will be saving money by not buying a printed dress. Many of the printed dresses sold by popular prom retailers are very expensive. A timeless solid dress could be worn for other occasions such as college formals, whereas a printed dress could probably not be worn again.

2. Minimal "bling"/sparkle- Personally, I don't really like sparkle on a dress. I prefer to add sparkle with accessories and jewelry. However, like I said, I am very picky. Sparkles and bling can easily be overdone on a prom dress, but it can also be done classily. Embellishment on the bodice or shoulder is always fun, but I would definitely stay away from all sequin gowns. I think that overdosing on bling definitely detracts from the most important feature: YOU!

Here's some dresses I've pulled that do sparkle the right way:

This dress is simple, and I love the soft color. The embellishment at the waist adds some sparkle, but it isn't distracting.

This navy number from JS boutique is a great dress for those who struggle with strapless (Me!) The embellishment is in such a cute little diamond shape. I'm such a sucker for navy.

AVOID a dress like this at all costs. The sequins AND the pattern make for a major distraction. Plus, it's almost guaranteed that you'll be tired of this dress by the time your college formal rolls around.

3. Don't Bare it All- As I mentioned earlier, my school has become very strict about dress length and how much skin can show in a dress. The rules for cutouts are pretty reasonable. A back cutout cannot come around to the front, and may not go below your belly button if you were to trace a line around to your back. Also, no plunging necklines. I think these are reasonable rules that every girl should follow when shopping for a dress. No one really wants to see a dress that plunges so far down your back we can see your crack. Cutouts around to the front leave little to the imagination, as do revealing necklines. Slits are normally ok, as long as they aren't incredibly high. Use your judgment and keep it classy!

WAY too much skin!

Have fun shopping for a dress and make sure it's "you!" Get alterations if needed to avoid having to pull your dress up all night! Spend time shopping for the right undergarments before the big day so you are all set and ready to go, and most importantly, comfortable!

Here's some of my picks for prom dresses:

J.Crew's wedding line is PERFECT for classic and timeless prom dresses. They offer several silhouettes and several colors. They tend to be a bit more expensive, but you will definitely be able to wear them again, and could even shorten them to make them more casual for future events. I love the color of this blue dress! Add some gold jewelry and heels and you have a sophisticated and elegant look.

I love the lace detailing on this green strapless gown

Another green dress, I know. but I love the less structured feel of this Lauren Ralph Lauren gown. The brooch on the shoulder is a fun touch.

And in case you haven't seen enough green dresses, here is my prom dress from junior year:

Have you had your prom yet? If not, do you have a dress? What are your personal requirements when dress shopping? Comment away!

Have fun at prom, I'll do a recap post of mine next week.
